Cruz Azul held a 2-1 lead over Jaguares in stoppage time of the second leg when Gerardo Torrado suddenly became the target of various Jaguares players.
Jaguares players claimed Torrado disrespected them.
Torrado said he did no such thing.
"The second (Ismael) Fuentes started yelling at the referee, I tried to separate them to calm things down. I didn't shove him or throw a punch or anything," he said at a press conference on Monday.
Whether he meant to or not, Torrado touched off a fracas that saw four Jaguares players given red cards.
"The only thing I did was to try and get away from the crowd, to try and avert a brawl. At no time did I taunt them or intentionally try to start a fight," Torrado said.
Torrado, though, is one of those players who can easily get under people's skins. After a full game of having to deal with him, it's likely Jaguares players were just tired of him and seized the opportunity to attack him. Or perhaps Torrado did taunt them. Whatever the reason, Torrado did well to escape unharmed.
