Four words

It took one reader four words to fire off an e-mail to me.

The first four words to my most recent SI.com story were "As a regional giant," to which this reader sent this e-mail a few minutes ago.

"Mexico is no longer a giant!!! Take that to the bank and cash it."

Even if Mexico doesn't qualify for the Olympics, I don't think their "regional giant" label will fall off.

Would that have already happened with the US dominance over the regional foe? As much as people want to argue whether the US was playing at home or not, it does not eliminate the fact that those games were played and the advantage is clearly in the US's favorite? I am sure Mexico would say the same thing if the roles were reversed. In fact they do so prior to the 2000 era. So You can consider mexico a giant of concacaf just not "THE GIANT OF CONCACAF" maybe you should clear that up.

Barring the unforseen, Mexico and the United States will always be the giants of CONCACAF because of 1)Mexico's great soccer tradition 2)the United States' superior economic resources 3)the weakness, inefficiency and corruption pervading the rest of the federations in the region.

Now, the order between Mexico and the U.S. will change periodically, but they will remain the region's two dominant powers for the forseeable future.

Giants are overrated!

Dear anonymous, he wrote "A regional giant" not "the regional giant. He didn't imply anything about the US.

Maybe some people just lack a grasp on the subtle intricacies of the English language. *rollseyes*

Some people simply like to argue too much....

wow. that was a bit rash. I mean as someone else pointed out you did say 'A regional giant' not 'THE regional giant'

I have absolutely no love lost for El Tri but there is no doubt that they are one of the top 2 teams in CONCACAF (the US being the other) the order is fluid as the match up is so tight, but there is no doubt they are in the top 2 and a pretty far throw from ever being #3
