Ballot help

Over the course of the year, I've reached out to readers to help fill out some ballots that I've had the opportunity to vote on.

So when I got my latest ballot, the first thing I thought of was to put it up right here and reach out again to our readers.

The LA Galaxy sent ballots out for their team awards. I've been asked to submit votes for the Galaxy's Defender of the Year and the Galaxy's Most Valuable Player. Yes, I know that seems like an oxymoron but I'm still going to send it in.

Here's the description for each.

(Credit card co.) DEFENDER OF THE YEAR AWARD

The 2007 (credit card co.) Defender of the Year Award will be awarded to the player judged to be the team’s best overall defender during the Major League Soccer regular season. Members of the media are asked to vote for their top three candidates for this award. Please vote only for Los Angeles Galaxy players.

(Automobile manufacturer) MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARD

The 2007 (automobile manufacturer) Most Valuable Player Award will be awarded to the player judged to be the best player on his team during the Major League Soccer regular season. Members of the media are asked to vote for their top three candidates for this award. Please vote only for Los Angeles Galaxy players.

Last year was pretty simple for me. Even though the Galaxy missed out on the playoffs, the club allowed just 37 goals so there were some legitimate options to choose from. But this year, well, not so sure.

But I'll leave it up to the readers. Tell me who you think I should vote for and why.

If you could vote "no one" that would obviously be the best choice after the way this season has gone.

But if I had to pick my top 3 candidates for each award, which is near impossible to do because everyone has been so bad, here is what it would be:

Defender:
1. Xavier
2. Cannon (the "defender" of the year for some teams has been given to some keepers before if I remember correctly)
3. Jazic

MVP:
1. Donovan
2. Cannon
3. Xavier

Joe Canon with Xavier a close second for the defender. Landy for MVP.

Defender: Cannon followed by Tyrone Marshal. Do not vote for Xavier (what a joke!).

MVP: anybody but Landy, again Cannon comes to mind, Martino maybe or Klein. Landon HAS NOT risen to the occasion.

The defender award seems easy to decide given that Cannon was the only Galaxy player to have made a game saving defensive play.

As far as MVP, I want to say Landon but I can't convince myselfto vote for a dude who's signature move as captain was giving up the arm band. Plus with the money he makes he could have sent Gordon to a soccer school by now.

Defender: the crossbar...saved the team from giving up even more goals this season.

MVP: Galaxy fans, who keep showing up in decent numbers despite the ghihest ticket prices and the worst team in the league.

Defenders:

If you can select a keeper:

Cannon
Xavier
Randolph

If you can't:
Xavier
Randolph
Sturgis (i'm sadly half-serious)

Cannon has been a stalwart between the pipes. Xavier has been very very good, with a couple of average games due to injury. Head and shoulders above anyone else. Randolph has really picked it up in the second half of the season, offering a decent offensive weapon from the left and quickly learning how to defend at MLS speed. I'm impressed, especially since he was pure crap to start the season.

MVP:
Cannon
Jones
The Crowd

Cannon has been there day in and day out in goal. He's organized the defense and led from the back. Jones has been stellar off the bench, playing smart and wily soccer, and lending calm and leadership to the games. Gives 100% every time.

No Landon because he just doesn't show up to half the games. At the MLS level he is a game changing player who hasn't changed that many games. He provides little leadership. I know he can't do it by himself, especially given this years' disastrous injury bug and scheduling, but he isn't taking charge the way he needs to to be the MVP.

DEFENDER OF THE YEAR:
ME

I nominate myself for for defending this pathetic team all season long.

MVP OF THE YEAR:
Again me, for coming up with the idea of bringing a mariachi into our section, all in order to entertain the fans when the team obviously could not.

Game in and game out, Cannon has been the most dependable of the defenders and all players for the Galaxy this year. While his GAA is high, I attribute that more to the way the team defends (or more accurately doesn't) than his lack of ability. I think a lesser keeper in the Galaxy goal would have seen moe lopsided scores against the Galaxy.
