Shawn Hunter on Chivas

I talked to Shawn Hunter, the new Chivas USA president and co-owner, for a recent article. The interview took place during the Chivas USA-Galaxy match.

Here are a couple of tidbits that didn't make the piece.

On Jorge Vergara:

"Obviously, he’s brilliant – then on the technical side, making sure that we’re discovering more players from Mexico and more Mexican-American players, so we can build a bridge to Mexico and Guadalajara that is the essence of the brand. But Antonio, who lives here, is more active and obviously can enjoy it more day to day and can interface with the front office and the players."

Moving Chivas USA to another stadium in LA:

"What happens years down the road – it might make sense. I do think this is a market that can support two great soccer teams, but probably also two great soccer stadiums. But that’s something that we’ll discuss and study in the years ahead."

On his first game day:

"Today was one of the most exciting days I’ve had in my career. I didn’t sleep well last night, thinking about the game and thinking about the possible outcomes. That makes all the long hours worth it. I have the feeling I’ll sleep pretty well tonight."

Always interesting to read about guys coming from other sports and expressing interest and/or working in MLS. Billy Beane, Shawn Hunter, Dave Checketts, Steve Nash - good perspectives.
