A unique feature of the Home Depot Center stadium is that there's grass seating on a little hill at one end of the stadium. Usually, though, they don't open that area up for fans unless everything else is sold out.
I always consider that a true sell-out, no matter what the numbers are officially. No one on the grass? Not a real sell-out in my eyes.
Well, they're selling the grass seats already for Friday's game, so there are really a lot of tickets sold. Traditionally, because of the fireworks show, the Galaxy have had excellent 4th of July attendance. In fact, they used to get bigger crowds at the Rose Bowl, because there was more room.
Heck, I'd be up for a nostalgia game at the Rose Bowl for the Galaxy now and then, but it hasn't happened. They did play a SuperLiga game at the Coliseum last year.
Chivas USA are having fireworks at their match the next day, however. That might be the best deal, because even the grass seats for the Galaxy aren't that cheap - 36 bucks.

That's intense. I think grass seating (when the rest of the stadium sells out) is more expensive than other sections.
Smart financial approach. Galaxy's getting ready to knock out 4 sell-outs in a row (assuming the games against Chivas and Chicago are sellouts) is that some sort of record in MLS?
36 bucks? wow. I'll have to check around the league (for nosebleed seats) but that seems steep, even with Beckham in the house. I'm sure the good tickets saw a nice bump when DB came to town, but I would be curious to know what these lawn seats cost before the DB.

Fact is you get the best view of the match from the upper deck and on the grassy knoll.

Your post takes me back to my first MLS game. I was on vacation from South Carolina, where my family had moved to the year before. It was my first Galaxy game and my first MLS game. July 4th, 1997. Over 50k fans at the Rose Bowl. So much fun spending most of the day in the grass where we parked, tailgated, played pickup games, and eventually went it to watch the match and the fireworks. Great memories.
I'm a very happy resident of 138 at the HDC but I would absolutely love it if the G's would go back to the Rose Bowl for the 4th. I was a regular part of those 50,000 plus crowds, and that was when the team would draw 12,000 or so on regular matches.
With the current fan base, I'll bet they could come close to selling the place out. How awesome would that be?
Yes, that's what I was thinking - a once a year at the Bowl would be awesome for old time's sake, extra capacity, great tailgating, and a nice nod to the fans out that way who used to be closer to games. If King Taco catered the press box, it would be perfect.
I wonder what the cutoff is for profitability. The number of tickets they need to sell in the Rose Bowl to match what a sold out HDC brings. If the number is less than 45k, I don't see any reason why they can't have the 4th of July game at the Rose Bowl every year.
For the Fourth of July, I'd love to see AEG offer military personnel a 50 percent discount on tickets and concessions, provided such personnel display a valid military ID. It would be a tremendous way to say "thank you" to people who are often patronized for political reasons and forgotten about.
Then again, AEG wouldn't have quite the profit margin, now would it?
Besides, Leiweke's and Anschutz's kin likely fought on the wrong side 70 years ago, if you know what I mean...
That would be fun to have 80k at the rose bowl...answering Joseph's question, I think the cutoff back in the days of the rose-bowl was 25k or so to not lose money on the night. This was according to my friend's coach who ran facilities of some type at the rose bowl...I do miss that extra set of season seats he would kick down to us and the 10 minute drive from Arcadia! 138 is my home now though :)
