Off their backs

Chivas USA will roll out a new promotion tonight against Real Salt Lake. At the end of each game, the players will take off their jerseys and toss them into the stands. Some lucky fans thus will leave the stadium with a sweaty, probably stinky jersey. Okay, well, after a good washing it'll be something worth holding and wearing.

It's just one of several initiatives the club rolled out this year to help boost attendance now and in the future.

Isn't it supposed to lower the collector value of the shirt if it's washed? Honestly, that's what I would do (wash it), but I've heard the sweat is supposed to make it authentic game-worn or something.

Yeah, I've seen people frame such jerseys, grass stains and all. I guess I wouldn't be in that crowd because that stinky thing would go straight into the washer as soon as I got home.

They should just rebrand as the reborn L.A. Aztecs..

I have three "gameworn" jerseys and even though the guys that gave them to me are awesome, they went straight to the washer! Too many people see those jerseys as a monetary value, but I think that if a player gives it to you, it should never even be thought of being sold. I see it different though if it is just tossed into the stands, it's special, but not as special as having the player give it to you.

P.S. Wow!!! Another one from the peanut Gallery. "No one likes us, we don't care!" The owners would be stupid to rebrand now!!!

This is actually a good measure. For those who are unaware of the front office's policy, it helps them identify with the players. For those who ARE aware of the policy, it helps them identify with the front office.

I guess the only ones who won't win anything are the Chivas players themselves and other teams' players if they want to trade jerseys with anyone. XD

One thing I forgot to mention is that I don't think they will be tossing them into the crowd. Last season, in the final match vs Houston, the players took the shirts off their backs and gave them to 18 hand-selected fans. I think that the fans that get thes, will be hand-selected as well.

That probably makes more sense. Otherwise you might get a chance of a handful of fans getting multiple jerseys.

I like the spectacle of throwing the jersey. I guess that's just me.

I'm with you Andrea. A lot of Galaxy players often throw their shirts into the Riot Squad's section, and it always seems very raw, very sporadic.

I'm sure that fans won't mind the jersey giveaways either way, but I prefer the traditional -- "hell yeah, we just had a good game, I'm going Brandy Chastain!"

so let's see if it's just the last 11 players on the pitch that gives chivas what a 1 in 10 shot at getting a jersey?
