Tough guess

Which player on the field for the Celebrity Soccer Challenge won the U.S. Open Cup four times?

I'm curious to see how long it will take for someone to provide the correct answer in the comments.

Jesse Marsch?

Nope. Good guess, but he wasn't at the match.

is it Pat Noonan?

It can't be Noonan. The Revs have only won once. It's not Wynalda or Lalas either.

Right. It's not Noonan. It's not Lalas or Wynalda, either.

Aargh! Even with the Cliff Note page:

I couldn't figure it out.

Vagenas?

Nope. I told you guys this one was a toughie.

I'll be impressed if even the U.S. Soccer guys, who run the Open Cup and sometimes stop by this site, get this one.

There aren't any Fire players out there - so is the trick that there is a Women's Open cup? If so, I'll guess Kristine Lilly.

No, Craig, it's not Lilly. Wynalda was a Fire player once, too, but it's not him either.

I'm actually not pulling any trick - the Open Cup I refer to is the actual venerable Open Cup, recently renamed the Lamar Hunt Open Cup.

Freddy Adu.

I wonder if what we're missing here is a full roster list or list of participants. It's not impossible that somebody from one of the 60's or 70's teams that won the Cup 4 times in six years was out there, but perhaps as a celeb now, not a cuurent MLS player.

If it's an older guy how about somebody from the LA based Maccabee SC who won in 75, 77, 78, and 81?

I'm baffled if its an MLS guy. Last La win was '05 and before that they won only in '01. In between we had Crew in '02, Fire '03, Wizards in '04, Fire again in '06 and Revs in '07. Nobody I know of moved between those teams fortuitously in the right years to make the grade. 1996 to 2000: DC, Dallas, Fire, Rochester Raging Rhinos, and Fire again.

Old guy, AC?

I'd go with Allen Hopkins then. He played in the A-League so there's a good chance he picked up some silver along the way.

The guy who is the correct answer is actually mentioned by me in the list of participants.

No fair just randomly guessing each one.

It's not Alan.

I can only count three for Albright. 1 DC two Galaxy. Is there one I'm missing?

Albright was still in college when DC won its Cup in 1996. No?

My guess is LaPaglia. I know he used to play professionally in Australia.

Donovan? no, only played for Quakes and Galaxy, Quakes never won. Noonan, Lalas, Wynalda, Hopkins, Vagenas, already denied by AC. LaPaglia is an Aussie, I don't see how it could be him. I mean this is the US Open Cup, Aussie teams don't play and as far as I know he's got no ownership interest in an MLS squad (specifically the Fire- only MLS team to win 4) Colletti's management has all been baseball. Albright only played for LA during the relevant time and they only won twice. Twellman is only a Revs guy. Guzan is way too young. Mr. Wyss quit playing at 22 due to illness.

I don't think it can be a player. it's got to be a more indirect connection like ownership or "water boy" or something. AC says it's a "guy", so eliminating the female players what's that leave?: skateborders, volleyball dudes, standup comics, and actors of one sort or another.

Too tough for me. I surrender.

The Maccabi Los Angeles and you said that you mentioned him in the article kind of gave it away...

Anon in this case is also known as concord when he posts on big soccer...

Congrats Conrad. I just posted a new post about Eric that gives a little more detail. You still did well to pick up on those clues.

Concord, sorry, I was reading too fast.
