Alain's travails

Six months ago, Alain Nkong was a man looking for a team. He latched on with Atlante of Mexico and despite an impressive performance did not secure his spot on the club until days before the start of the season. Nkong, a Colorado Rapids castaway, proved valuable to Atlante. He scored four goals and was a valuable asset to the club. Atlante went on to win their first championship in 14 years and although Giancarlo Maldonado was the scoring star Nkong played a role in the title-winning club.

Nkong's performances did not go unnoticed. He was named to Cameroon's squad for the African Cup of Nations. But his decision to participate in the tournament cost him his spot on Atlante. The Mexican champions loaned Nkong to Leon of the second division for the season.

To the victors, then, go the spoils but I'm not sure Nkong had these spoils in mind.

Who cares about Alain Nkong when the Galaxy traded Chris Albright to New England for "allocation money"?

I hear something called the Super Draft happened today. Funny thing is that I thought this was an American soccer blog, so I kinda expected to hear something about it.

According to Leon's website Nkong is not a member of the team. Maybe they're waiting for him to return from the African Nations Cup or perhaps the transaction did not go through? Nkong was a fan favorite with Atlante and I would not be surprised if another Mexican club picks him up for next season. The problem is it is now too late to register him for the Torneo Clausura which began tonight and Nkong may end up looking for opportunities elsewhere. A return to MLS perhaps?
