The two Mexican teams had opposite trajectories - when Chivas managed a tie with so many reserves and then won without too much trouble versus the Galaxy, it didn't seem that they'd fail to advance.

Pachuca, meanwhile, started out with a loss, then squeaked out a tie, before finally winning. They tied with Chivas on points, but the first tie-breaker was head-to-head results.
