Wells, one way to look at it

In a piece titled "American Indifference" Steven Wells closes his Guardian blog with a anecdote about Chivas USA and the Los Angeles Galaxy. Wells is hanging with apparently, the hard-core Legion supporters when some Galaxy fans come by to mock them with a little goat hanging on the end of a noose.

Yet Wells doesn't see this as an example of cheeky Galaxy fans trying to get the goat of Chivas USA fans (pun intended). He apparently has no knowledge of what the Riot Squad did to the Chiva Girls blow-up dolls.

Instead, he uses the furious reaction of Chivas USA fans as the example of true fandom.

However, the sad truth for Chivas USA this year is that they've been drawing far less fans to the stadium than the Galaxy, even though they've been playing better and their ticket prices are much cheaper. The Legion didn't even show up for the team's last league game versus the conference leaders, the Revolution, going instead to a Chivas Guadalajara friendly where mostly reserve players performed.

Basically, if indifference was the topic, there's a lot of empty seats saying that's an issue for Chivas USA.

I think he's using the example as Mexican fandom, not Chivas USA fandom. He spent more time talking about the reaction from the guy in Houston than he did about this last piece of the story.

Chivas USA has issues drawing fans, but the ones they do draw out are good.

yep, all 5 of them are good.

having the legion attend a chivas mexico friendly instead of the team that funds them, well that is a statement in itself. chivas usa will never be successful because even their most 'hardcore' fans only have them as their #2 team.

sad but true

If Wells is comparing Chivas USA fandom to Mexican fandom or even Guadalajara fandom, he's way off. Those fans are both passionate and numerous, but that hasn't really translated to Chivas USA - at least not in the numbers.

So, according to the Guardian article, we (as Galaxy fans) should take this stuff more seriously? I love when rival fans make fun of each other. Even UCLA fans laugh when USC students walk around campus all week before the big game dragging stuffed bears.

Preaching to the choir. CUSA is clueless on how to attract more Non-Chivas de Guad fans. This is their third year and most fans prefer to watch Mexican soccer than CUSA.

What a joke!

I've got $5 that says his article was 98% fiction. He probably hasn't even been to the HDC.
