Excuses, excuses
Here's one of the weirder rationales for why the U.S. is able to consistently beat Mexico in the U.S., even when most of the crowd is rooting for Mexico. It was sent in by a reader who took issue with my espn.com article.
"The fields are too small to play on, the U.S. is used to playing on these small fields to their advantage. They feel more at home even if the crowd is against them. It's their atmosphere."
Another reader told me the language barrier was an impediment for the Mexican team, especially with the refs. Somehow I doubt they had trouble understanding Canadian referee Mauricio Navarro. Just a hunch.
