Landon Donovan and Jonathan Bornstein are gone from the Galaxy and Chivas USA respectively, probably for the next six weeks or so. How both sides fare in the coming weeks could go a long way towards determining their postseason hopes.
Some thoughts on both departures:
- Not sure how the Galaxy will plan on using Kyle Martino with Landon gone but it seems to me the easiest way to replace him would be to slide Martino to the center and play Santino Quaranta on the left. With Cobi Jones on the right, Martino and Peter Vagenas in the middle and Quaranta out left (for 60 minutes, which is about all he can handle right now), the Galaxy would be decent in the midfield. Sure, no Landon but that lineup can cause problems. Nathan Sturgis is also in the mix but he will be gone soon enough for Under-20 duty.
- Chivas' predicament is potentially solved in a more straightforward manner: Bornstein out, Orlando Perez in. As important of a player as he's been this year and last, Bornstein hasn't produced anything offensively this season. He has zero goals and zero assists this year. If Orlando Perez can do a decent job defensively, Bornstein's loss could be minimized.
