Becks, Chivas and the LA Coliseum

When Real Madrid played the LA Galaxy in 2005, a prevailing question at the time was regarding the site of the match. With big BIG stadiums like the LA Coliseum (capacity 92,500) and the Rose Bowl (92,000+) nearby, the match was instead played at Home Depot Center (capacity 27,000).

AEG exec Tim Leiweke said at the time (and I'm paraphrasing) that they could have held the game somewhere else but instead wanted to make it an exclusive, hard-to-get ticket because that sort of event generates buzz.

Two years later with David Beckham in tow, it seems that they don't feel the same way.

The superliga match between the LA Galaxy vs. Chivas de Guadalajara will be played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, July 28 at 7 p.m.

Internet presale for these tickets go on sale Monday, June 4 via Ticketmaster.

You're probably right about the AEG being happy to make money off the extra tickets sold in the Coliseum, but the X-games is also conducting its annual August takeover of the HDC at that time. Technically, even though this game is in July, they're usually constructing crazy stuff byt then, like a rally-car track right in the the stadium with a ramp that takes part of the course outside.

I'd have preferred a final hurrah at the Rose Bowl, for old times' sake.

X Games probably takes precedence over anything else in late July/early August but the Chivas-Galaxy game was originally scheduled for HDC and was moved to Saturday with the Pachuca-Galaxy switched over to Tuesday, July 24 instead. That one will be at HDC.

It's a business and they'll make more money going about the way they did so who can argue that? But in my opinion also reflects perhaps a shift in priorities.

I've heard Lalas echo this logic regarding home game prices not too long ago...I guess parking and concession stand prices should also be exclusive and hard to get.
