What makes a game big? What makes fans and players alike circle certain dates on their calendar? What makes coaches dump players after a certain game in particular? Which games cause the losing general manager to resign?
Rivalries.
No, they're not to the level of big games around the world, but MLS rivalries are growing.

Of course rivalries are great for sports, but I'm wary of manufactured rivalries. Sometimes I feel like every part of US culture is manufactured by corporations, at least let us have our sports rivalries as our own!
Dallas/Houston is another one of those where everyone just says it, I guess because of their geography, but is that all that it takes to be a rivalry nowadays?
Not saying this Chivas/Galaxy definitely is (manufactured), but with the amount of coverage it received and considering how new the Chivas team is.... I just want the rivalries to happen not be produced. ;)
True that. San Jose vs. LA was a real rivalry in MLS. Also NY vs. DC is a real MLS rivalry lots of pushing and shoving and desire not to lose to the other. It makes you wonder why MLS doesn't maket those games more. Instead they (MLS) try to name corp sponsored events some staff person who doesn't even watch soccer formulated something like the Super Classico or the Texas whatever they call it.
I think the Galaxy/Chivas match-up is a rivalry in spite of the marketing, not because of it. But if people don't think its real, I question if they've ever been to one of the matches. The games are electric.
