Simply Solo

Ok, here's an easy one. This post will have stuff on Hope Solo, so if one is tired of that, don't read the rest of it.

Ann's take.

Hopeful celebration

Helene's take

Jeff's view

Mark's observations

Michelle muses

Scott F. says

Hope reaches out and touches someone

It doesn't take a genius to guess that the second imitation gold medal Hope celebrated with was for her father, Jeffrey Solo.

Everyone's on board now, but I'm sure Hope know's who was there for her during those initial dark days of despair.

Andrea, you got the gold medal game wrong but you got the more important story right. Nice job!

I didn't really think of the second medal as being for her Dad, AC. That's surely a better explanation than the one I came up with, which was that one represented the Olympics she'd just won and one the Gold she's convinced she'd have if Ryan had left her in net at WC 2007.

In the long run, I suspect that everybody is better off for the WC disaster. I think a simmering disfuctionality was exposed with a vengence, everybody suffered, people grew, a new coach and attitude was ushered in, everybody refocused on soccer and, as I've said before, have abondoned the "sorority" attitude based on somebody else's legacy for a healthier bond of mutual respect and a common goal of making their own... and Hope is, it seems to me, clearly appreciative of being able to be an integral part of that process.

It ain't exactly the same, but it wasn't until after suffering through the near death experience of his cancer and chemo that Lance Armstrong won those 7 Tour de France's in a row. Sometimes it seems the old saw that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger is true. So I think for Hope and, at least in my view, her teammates.
