Donovan has set the standard - even now, players are always compared to LD (they're either better or worse than him), so that says something.
I do question those who actually think Gooch and Dempsey epitomize success in Europe. Especially Gooch. And their "success" has certainly not translated to the US National Team.
Donovan was a nonfactor in 2 out of 3 games in WC06. I think he was very much a factor in the Italy game.
Good compilation of Donovan's top 10 goals. I'd go along with your choices.
Bull. Landon is a great example of the unearned ego that might be holding US soccer back, not pushing it forward. Go back and watch his interview after one of the Gold Cup games. Landon scored the first goal on a PK and then this kid, a mid (?) fullback (?) blasted this amazing, blistering goal in the second half that gave the US the win.
"Despite his failures at the 2006 World Cup -- Donovan was a non-factor in each of the United States' three games there -- Donovan said he considers himself a leader on the national team."
