Soccer Reporting

I caught up with Larry Morgan of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune the other day. After his newspaper group consolidated with another, he was moved off the Galaxy beat, but he stopped by a practice just for old times' sake.

When we chatted about how things might change for media with Beckham's arrival, I recalled that Larry had previously covered another big soccer star, Johan Cruijff, when he played with the LA Aztecs. Larry had the soccer beat back then, so I asked how that went.

"Cruijff, it was hard to get any access to him," Larry explained. "You could talk to any other player pretty easily, but Cruijff only on occasion to a whole pool of reporters. A one-on-one interview? Forget it."

Might be déjà vu all over again.

It's funny how things go in cycles - while our little reporter klatch regrets and misses having Larry around, we were also celebrating another local's move to the ranks of dedicated writer. MLSnet's Greg Daurio landed a full-time soccer job with 90 Minutes, a magazine.

So for those who write me to ask how to make it as a soccer writer, when I'm cobbling together a series of part-time gigs and freelance assignments, I'll just refer you to Greg.

He's through with restaurant work and that weird manager of his there forever, hopefully.
