Hopefully the Oguchi Onyewu saga is over. It looks like he's landed at Newcastle United on a loan deal that could make the transfer permanent in the summer.
Marseille was better than Liege but Newcastle is certainly better than Marseille. Gooch will get toughened up even more so than he has been already with the Magpies. The club has a fantastic history and a rich tradition and a demanding fan base. All that's certainly going to toughen Onyewu up.

I think Gooch's move to Newcastle is a good one, but I don't think a move to Marseille would have been bad. Newcastle may be bigger (not least in terms of salaries), but are also perennial underachievers. Marseille, on the other hand, play in a weaker league, but are more likely to play regularly in Europe.
Not a bad choice, then, though I wonder if, given that he only signed a 6-month loan deal, Gooch really intends this to be a long term move or merely an audition for other teams even bigger than Newcastle.
