Ottawa breaks new ground

I have to admit that I was a bit surprised to read something about Ottawa's new bid for an MLS team.

"Costed" isn't accepted as valid by my word processor, but I guess that's behind the times, because it's apparently a word in financial circles. It's the past tense and past participle of the transitive verb form. costed To estimate or determine the cost of: The accountants costed out our expenses.

I hope Vancouver and Montreal step up soon. Ottawa is a smaller city and I'm not so sure it can support an MLS team the way the other big Canadian cities can. I'm not sure they can fill or come close to filling a 30k stadium on a regular basis.

"Ottawa". Not as you have it in the title.

pleeease fix that typo... feels so american that you can't spell the capital city of your neighbor to the north... brutal, just brutal.

tell canada to fund their own league.
where else in the world do you have a 2 country league?

Canada. Please set-up your own league, judging by the performance of your national team, it might serve you well.

The Portland Timbers are the clear front-runner, ready built fan-base, rivalry, stadium, passion.

your word processor likes "ottowa"? (blogger seems to not like it, even as I type this comment...)

"maintown" NYC needs a team - that will effectively move the metrostars, er, red bulls out - "ottowa" or portland or vancouver can take them :-)

more canadian teams are coming... whether the xenophobes like it or not... it's all about the bejamins, baby. get used to it.

MLS is not unique in this sense

Even though Eugene is jonesing for an MLS team, he'll have to line up behind NY, STL, Portland, MTL and VAN. And his proposal has the stadium in Kanata, right across from the Sens rink. It's waaaay outside the city and Ottawa has had a tough time keeping their NHL franchise.

But man the hatred towards Ottawa runs deep here in Trawna - it would be an awesome rivalry!

BTW - what's with the xenophobic isolationist stuff? TO's been great for the league.

is the typo going to get fixed or what?

Xenophobes. What about the egg on the face of "oh so welcoming" and perfect Canadians whose police beat the entire Under-20 national team from Chile during a Youth World Cup, including coaches and trainers. Very civilized of you soccer deserving worldly Canadians.

The facts don't lie. Vancouver plays in a high school stadium worse than most high schools in the US, I have been there, don't try to lie about it...and a dome from the 1980's is not a solution. Montreal is a decent candidate but is it better than NYC2, St. Louis, San Diego, and P-town. Uhh no...

Portland has the best fan-base to rival any city in the US. Check the USL 1 attendance. 13,700 for the last game of the season to watch a crap team who didn't even make the playoffs, just last week. The Timbers Army are ready.

The only candidate on that list that is better than Montreal is Portland.

Sorry but NYC2 is the top prospect no matter who else is on the table. Portland would be second.

Anyway its not about being isolationist. How many teams from Monaco play in the top french flight? Oh one, ok. How many from Wales play in the top flight of England? Zero, with a couple being a league down but can never actually win things like the FA Cup and probably would not be allowed to retain the title of the premiership either. How many teams from New Zealand play in the australian league? One.

Sorry but its not xenophobic to think that if Canada can support four or more teams that they should have their own league. Toronto is fine. But adding any more than that is just stupid when there are markets in the US just as viable, if not more so, than those of places like Ottawa.

CACuzcatlan said...

I agree that there are more deserving markets than Ottawa. But you have to face the facts. MLS is officially recognized by FIFA at the top division league for BOTH the US and Canada. Its not an American league anymore.

Second, if you think Canada can support more than 4 teams, you are mistaken. I doubt they could even support that many. Only Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver could support a pro soccer team.

Ok maybe I was a bit harsh there. I had just finished a bunch of Bill Archer posts so my dander was up.

I just know that traditionally the US has been isolationist (not an insult btw) and with all your anti immigration talk and kicking illegals out it seems like you're back to your old tricks.

The Chilean incident was started by the Chile team and officials going after the ref. Cops intervened, like they should. Cops by the team bus told players to stay away from the fans by the fence. Argentinian fan taunts a Chilean player, who then goes nuts and runs toward said fan. Cops go nuts and tackle/taze him. Fracas ensues. Tasers, pepper spray and chilean ninjas. The cops overreacted for sure, the kid who saw red mist and went after the fan probably had no idea what was coming. Then it comes down to civies attacking cops. Never a good scene. But it had nothing to do with nationality, or being afraid of other cultures. Would have happened even with Canadian kids. Hell, it happens all the time with Torontonians.

Canada, although seemingly similar, is actually a very different place than the US. Did you know that multiculturalism is in our constitution? There's a very high profile Minister of Multiculturalism. It's intitutionalized here, and popular. We were the first country in the world to recognize and implement it. Politicians who denounce it die a very quick death. (hello Preston Manning!) 5% of our parliament are Sikh! And we love it! We're very proud of being the leading pluralist society in the world.

We also suck at a lot of things too. But I could think of a lot of worse places to live.

Here's for Portland and Montreal as the new whipping boys of the MLS!

Canada has as much class as they scored goals in the u20 cup last year. Booing our players at the u20 games and our national anthem. Then booing our national anthem at the MLS all-star game. Now they want a whole bunch of teams in our league. Yes, its our still our league. It was started in the USA and is under the umbrella of the ussf, so it will always be our league whether you say it isn't. Xenophobic? Ya, damn right I am. I think people in England would be too if three, four or five teams from Scotland wanted to work their way into the EPL. We don't need a 32 team league here in the US. Its gotta stop soon and those spots need to be taken up by US teams, sorry Canada.

PS - Enjoy your world cup qualifying.

Fair enough. It is your league, you created it specifically to develop US players and have every right not to want foreigners involved.

Be TFC did a pretty good job of developing Edu and Wynne. Not that a US team wouldn't have done as good a job, but TFC didn't hold them back.

Just close your eyes and think of the Queen.

And low blow man, qualifying will be a looooong shot.

Damn, so many haters. Do your research before posting:

FYI, there are 4 Welsh teams that are trying to work their way up to the EPL. Two of them play in the Championship and could potential be in the EPL next year if they get promoted.

The four teams are:
Cardiff City
Swansea City
Newport County
Wrexham

MLS have have been started with support from USSF, but it is not officially a two country league. I guess some of you just can't face the facts.
