The United States has countless numbers of unearthed gems that will never get discovered. Some go unnoticed because of financial situations, others get passed over because they don't fit the mold. Whatever the case, players are slipping through the cracks - the only question is how many of them are doing so.
Here's a good story from Culture of Soccer of a brother and sister pair born and raised in the farming communities of central California who are getting their shot for Mexico, Amber and Alexis Hernandez.
The US may still reap the rewards from the Alexis, as he has apparently been contacted by US Soccer.

Loving this post. I'd love to hear your impressions of the level of play some of the 'pirata' leagues, especially the youth leagues.
Growing up in Duarte I used to go out and play in some on the weekends. While I could still compete I wasn't exactly in the best league but I know in places like LA, there is a whole host of leagues that are overlooked by USSF, and locally by CSL.

it's a tough choice...for me growing up here i would think playing for the US would make more sense just because my life is here and i will always be here, but at the end of the day an opportunity to play at the highest level no matter for who is tough to turn down
