Well, apparently, Zidane wants 15 million a year to play for MLS, according to Steven Goff of the Washington Post, who also notes that the league isn't going for it.
For those of you who have followed the reality of David Beckham's actual salary (an estimated 9 mil a year) instead of the trumpeted total with endorsement dollars included, you'll know that 15 million yearly would break the MLS bank far more than Beckham's deal.
Like I posted before, I'm not shocked Zidane won't be in MLS this season.
Too bad. I really think it would have been a great opportunity for him and for the league.
Zidane is crazy to request $15 million a year, considering Real Madrid only paid him $8 million a year. And the guy hasn't played in a year either.

Crazy like he got in the World Cup final?
ReplyDeleteThe pay request just basically confirmed my suspicion that Zidane doesn't really want to come back - and only an obscene amount of money would have convinced him to do so.
Thanks, AEG, for floating the $250 million number on Beckham. Who knows if anyone had a real chance with Zidane, but surely he wouldn't have asked for as much as $15 million without knowing what Becks is getting. I think that for a while at least, their publicizing of that number is going to hurt everyone's chances of using that rule.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's the skewed 5 years/250 million figure tossed around and Zidane figured hey, if Becks can get 50 million per, I should get at least 15.
ReplyDeleteWell, I can't blame him for it...if that was his thought process, he would have certainly had a point!
ReplyDeleteHowever, as an FC Dallas fan, I'm still bitter that the Edgar Davids thing suddenly fell apart after the Beckham announcement. It was probably a bluff to begin with, but I'll be 'typical internet guy' and make ridiculous assumptions about what my team is doing.
ya it would be great to see zidane and beckham playing together again. Last time they played together was for madrid.
ReplyDeleteI also heard many great players ended their career in US.Why not zidane
