It's official - Xavier waived

The Galaxy add Eddie and say farewell to Abel. From the press release:
LA Galaxy defender Eduardo Dominguez has officially been added to the club’s roster ahead of this weekend’s game against the New York Red Bulls at Giants Stadium. The 29-year old Argentine center back agreed to terms with the club last week and has been training with the rest of his teammates all week in preparation for Saturday’s game.

Additionally, the Galaxy have waived defender Abel Xavier.

“Abel has been a wonderful professional at our club and I want to personally thank him for coming to Los Angeles and being a part of the Galaxy family. We wish him continued success in what has already been a long and storied career,” LA Galaxy President and General Manager Alexi Lalas said. ”This was a difficult decision, but it was necessary.”

All other factors aside, I think Xavier really hurt himself by refusing to play on turf. He was trying to preserve his knee, but the Galaxy weren't in a position to accommodate that. They have to play and win league games on turf.

  1. Andrea, any chance you can find out IF X salary still counts against the G's cap (since he was cut after July 1st) and if Dominguez, at least this year is paid with allocation money ?

  2. Not necessarily the way you put it; but clubs don't discuss many contract details, so I'm not optimistic about finding out.

    From SoccerAmerica -

Most players are "semi-guaranteed," meaning they are guaranteed as of a specific date, in this case July 1. But there are exceptions.

Each team can leave a player or two hanging after the July 1 date, pending outcomes regarding other deals that may be in the works. Los Angeles is trying to trade players -- including Carlos Ruiz -- so it can clear salary-cap space to bring in a defender reported to be Eduardo Dominguez and perhaps one other player. New York has signed Venezuelan midfielder Jorge Rojas and Argentine defender Juan Pietravallo but needs to make other moves to officially register them.

For those unfortunates twisting in the wind, they may need to wait a week or two to find out if their contracts are indeed guaranteed, and can still be waived during that period. At best, they'll be traded and their contracts will still be in force; at worse, they're cut loose before the All-Star Game.

  3. i believe it will go to against the cap, since the red bulls were told that reyna's salary still counts against the cap.

Well, it was bloody well about time!

Galaxy fans, YOUR LONG NIGHTMARE IS NOW OVER!

And now, a word from Bozo the Mad Genius, w/commentary interspersed:

Abel has been a wonderful professional at our club and I want to personally thank him for coming to Los Angeles and being a part of the Galaxy family.

Yes, he was a wonderful professional. Wonderful at ball watching. Wonderful at blowing penalty kicks w/an international championship on the line. Wonderful at blowing up at referees to hide his own deficiencies.

We wish him continued success in what has already been a long and storied career.

Yes, storied for such feats as ball-watching, blowing PK's and taking steriods, for which the Premiership banned him for 18 months before Bozo signed him.

This was a difficult decision, but it was necessary.

Difficult, how, really? Unless Xavier keeps people's minds off how you played in the back, Bozo?

  5. BTW, here's a comment from Ives Galarcep's blog about why Un-abel may have been released:

He kept playing right up until he was released because he made a bunch of money and would've caused a ton of problems on the bench. Imagine this scenario: a vain, once-talented, and highly paid veteran is hanging around your locker room but not playing, despite the obvious problems in defense. That's the kind of situation that causes a team more harm than good.
