The next day
... and I'm still wondering what happened to Pablo Mastroeni. I thought Mastroeni played a great game in central midfield against Argentina on Sunday, and still showed that he can be a reliable starter against a top-tier opponent. He played like the Mastroeni of old, and then was called for some sort of phantom red card.
I wish you'd been there to get the real scoop, like you did when EJ got kicked by Oswaldo Sanchez.
ReplyDeleteSome outlets have reported tht Mastro insulted the Argentines (but no specifics given) while the U.S. squad has said it was for throwing a ball. It doesn't make sense, though.
Donovan didn't seem all that "mad" in this game. I was a bit disappointed - how come only Dallas and Houston see the old "Throat Slasher"?
ReplyDeletethat didn't make sense though because after Edu got the card yellow, espn showed video of mastroeni before up until he got the red card and it didn't seem like he said anything to the any argentine players or the ref.
ReplyDeleteThe guys on Galavision were wondering if he spit on anyone but they showed mulitple replays and nothing. No spitting, no gesturing, no contact, no actions worthy of a booking.
ReplyDeleteUS soccer's web site has a quote from Mastroeni but nothing about the red card and I haven't found anything that anyone wrote specifically about the red card.
Hopefully someone did and I just missed it.
could have been just a blown call by the ref, maybe he got confused and thought he gave the yellow to Mastroeni and then realized he already gave a yellow and then pulled out the red. who knows, but if you guys find out it would be great to hear.
ReplyDeleteRumor has it that ref will be working MLS Cup this year.
