2008 MLS players' salaries are out.
Here's a link to a PDF file that breaks it down by club.
A quick rundown of the highest- and lowest-paid players:
David Beckham - $6.5 million
Cuauhtemoc Blanco - $2.7 million
Marcelo Gallardo - $1.9 million
Juan Pablo Angel - $1.6 million
Claudio Reyna - $1.3 million
Landon Donovan - $900,000
...
...
About 40 senior roster players - $33,000
Some 70 developmental players - less than $20,000
I ran my own little analysis and found that the avg salary is about $87K when you don't count everyone from LD up.
ReplyDeleteThere's actually 121 (out of 332) players that are making less than $35,000.
There are 75 players making less than $20,000. It would cost MLS $388,500 to raise the minimum salary to $20K and bump those 75 players up.
45 players make less than $13K.
oh and counting all guaranteed salaries, including all the DPs, the median salary is $61,575
ReplyDeletepretty awful salaries... helps understand the level of play in mls. saludos, d
ReplyDeleteThere's a reason why the players' union put this out now. It's a pre-emptive strike against the owners and commissioner's office before the collective bargaining negotiations begin.
ReplyDeleteRemember, I said in another thread on this blog that the league could well be making its own pre-emptive strike by not having its teams (except two) feature players on the covers of its media guides.
Why else would the Galaxy have a media guide without Beckham, Donovan or Ruiz (or all three) on the cover? I've been highly critical of Leiweke and Lalas but not even they are that stupid as not to feature their three best players -- and the one on whom they rest all their hopes of being a "super club" -- on their media guide.
And it only takes $388,500 to raise the salary cap?
The labor negotiations are going to get ugly, folks. Remember, you heard it here first.
