Padilla video
Announcer: Jesus Padilla, of Chivas Guadalajara, was born in California, and that provoked controversy because of the team’s tradition to play with only Mexicans. Padilla declared that he is 100 percent Mexican, that he was born in California due to familial necessity, but returned to Jalisco within ten days. The information was first published by Sports Illustrated. Chivas considers Padilla 100 percent Mexican, and the case closed.
Jesus: “Within ten days I came to San Jose de Reynoso, with my parents, who were over there working, but I’ve lived the rest of my life here in Mexico. I couldn’t be born there in the living room, I had to go to the hospital, so that’s why there’s a birth certificate (in California). But I’m Mexican, I feel Mexican, and that’s the truth.
Voice over: Jesus Padilla is the fifth U.S. player in Chivas history to play for the team. The first was Wintilio Lozano, who was born in Gerome, Arizona and played eight seasons with the club. The most recent was Gerardo Mascareno, who played 10 games with the club in the summer of 1998.
(ESPNDeportes had the original Padilla story, where he said his mother was American and that the family moved to San Jose, California when he was two years old. He also mentioned all his little sisters were born in San Jose)
case closed. move on.
ReplyDeleteThis guy is a chronic liar.
ReplyDeleteHe was born in California because his father lived there, because his mother was born there, and because that's where they chose to make their lives.
Does anybody really believe anything that comes out of his mouth anymore? It's unfortunate, the tradition has been tarnished.

ReplyDelete"The tradition has been tarnished."
Well, get over yourself and your traditions.
The year is 2008.
Don't try to sell us "espejitos" aka... little mirrors like the Spanish sold the Aztecs.

if he really spent his life growing up in Cali. Why doesnt someone just find a picture of him in primary or high school? That would really settle the issue of him growing in Mexico or not.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that the US under 20 head coach has been quoted as saying Padilla wanted to play for the US and Padilla didn't address that statement keeps the issue pretty open. At least as a news story.
For as a soccer fan, I could careless about all this. Honestly so Chivas has been exposed, move on. But I think LB and AC rebutting his and Chivas's statements on their blog is an appropriate place to do it.
Well, here's his older sister Carmen's college bio - it says she, at least, went to high school in to high school in California. Would her parents split the family up?
ReplyDeletehere
Hummmm his sister's not bad looking:-)
ReplyDeleteSeriously, it is unlikely that the family split the childern up but not unheard of. Plenty of family have allowed to left behind a child in another country or another part of the country for various reasons. That said it is interesting that you guys and others have mentioned him playing on youth teams in the San Jose area. If people can produce evidene showing that was the case then his story about being raised in Mexico since he was 10 days old is shot to hell. But the real issue and I think you 2 have hinted at it before in earlier post is that Chivas misrepresented who Padilla is inorder to avoid all this.
