The United States national team unveiled the men's 2008 home kits.
There are quite possibly the worst US soccer jersey since the mid-90s. I mean, what are we playing, soccer or rugby?
According to U.S. Soccer, these jerseys are going to make their "world debut" against Mexico a week from today. Let's hope for US fans' sake that the team looks better than their jerseys.
It's probably me, but thin little stripes make me think of pajamas. I didn't like the other pinstripes (Ecuador game) either.
ReplyDeleteBest kit ever, completely love it and hope it's stay around a long time. It would be nice to see us stay with a kit like other countries do so people immediately know it's the USA.
ReplyDeleteI hope Tommy Hilfiger got a nice fee for his new design.
ReplyDeleteWHo knew the MNT soccer jerseys also served as the US National Sailing Team shirt?
Nike announces heavy recruiting drive for design majors who from sororities and fraternities at Ivy league colleges and major southern universities.
I could go all day...
Seriously. If the "denim" jersey from 1994 wasn't out there, this would be tied with the current royal blue with pinstripes third jersey as 2nd worst USA jersey ever. Are those gray and white stripes separated by a horizontal red pinstripe? Blech is putting it too mildly.
What was wrong with the red jerseys from 1998? Or the classic one-off Don't Tread on Me jersey from pre-2002? Hell, what's wrong with the current design scheme?
I wonder if Nike would make more money if we actually stuck with one of these damn things. I agree that this one looks like the yachting team, but then again, there (for some odd reason) aren't numbers on the thing yet - maybe it looks better with them. God, I hope so.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think the Ecuador game kits were that bad at all during the actual game - they looked horrible to me on the website beforehand, though. Maybe those ridiculous goals that Landon scored helped my perception, though...
giving this one a thumbs down. why does nike have such a hard time remembering that our colors are red, white and blue? i understand the whole less is more thing, but seriously, gray? and is that black or navy piping? hopefully there will be a red away jersey released for qualifying. what's worse, the new training gear is pretty sweet...www.ussoccer.com.
ReplyDeleteComplete crap. When does our Nike contract run out again?
ReplyDeleteThis classic Slate article says it all:

I'm in the minority, obviously, but I like it.
ReplyDeleteI think the goal of these kits is to make something people would wear not just on a field, but around town, in the office, etc.
By that standard I think they are doing a fine job.
This looks like a women's kit. Based on the cut and design, I would have to say that is a very embarrassing jersey.
ReplyDeleteI respectfully disagree. I like it. Lets call Tim Gunn and get his opinion.
ReplyDeleteI like it!
ReplyDeleteTim Gunn!
ReplyDeleteActually now that you mention it, isn't this what got Victoria voted off last week?
Complete Crap!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI like it, but not as much as the last white shirt with the vertical stripe. It does look a bit to much like a rugby shirt with the horizontal stripes.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know if this is the home or away kit?
Count me among those who really like this design. It's subtle and classy.
ReplyDeleteI haven't liked a U.S. men's jersey since the 1998 World Cup. I know that tournament was a debacle but it had nothing to do with the uniforms.
I also liked the 1990 kits that adidas manufactured for the World Cup. Those, frankly, were the best in my lifetime.
These are kind of retro Nike/USA circa mid 1990's.
ReplyDeleteDoes it pass the test of whether I would wear it....Yes and No.
I might wear this shirt before and after games but as a national team uniform, it's hard to look tough in these.
At least it's not gold like that hideous uni Nike gave the USWNT before the World Cup....
ReplyDeleteI prefer the Don't Tread uniform the team wore in Hartford before the 2006 World Cup:

Why don't we ever get a uniform that incorporates the iconic US flag?
Speaking of Tim Gunn, maybe we can persuade Project Runway to do a new US jersey as a challenge.....they couldn't do worse than this boring kit.
any soccer related news? Like who Chivas is looking to fill it's coaching vacancies or if minimum salaries are ever going to be increased or if other draft picks are going to choose anything over the MLS?
ReplyDeleteAwful awful awful.
ReplyDeleteI think the denim jersey from 94 is slightly better than this.
I think Bjorn Borg won Wimbledon in that shirt back around 1980...
ReplyDeletebeax speax said it all with the Bjorn Berg comment! It also looks like the cheap polo shirts on sale at my local grocery store, 2 for $10!
ReplyDeleteWell at least Clint Mathis and Zach Thornton are no longer US internationals because those horizontal stripes would make their guts look even bigger!
weaksauce, indeed.
ReplyDeletemy take on it: www.thehnoeic.wordpress.com
yet i guess its not too bad considering france's and germany's new adidas unis..
well done L.B. Well done.
ReplyDeleteThis uniform looks like they wanted to appeal to the backwards-baseball-cap-wearing frat boys. They'll just sneak it onto a rack at Hollister, Abercrombie & Eagle, LTD and hope the guys are so drunk that they don't notice they're buying "nancy-boy" soccer jerseys.
ReplyDeleteIt's not ugly, it's just dumb.
It's definitely a lame design.
ReplyDeleteSo which country currently has the best kit?
This uni is amazing!

ReplyDeletedon't like it. Like many others I like the red "Don't tread" jersey. The USA crest used on them is an improvement on what we use now.
ReplyDeleteI've liked Mexico's kits for a while because they have a strong green/white/read theme...like the bandera. We should use a strong red/white/blue theme in our uniforms with blue and red being the two dominant colors rather than white. Leave the subtlety behind and wear the national colors with pride!
