Euro trivia

I'm writing a column on Euro 2008 for the PE and came across an interesting tidbit. Only one of the 16 participating nations has gotten out of the first round in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups as well as Euro 2004.

Can you name that country?

Hint: it's not England.

    It has to be Italy, since the Italians won the cup last year.

    Spain didn't make it out of their group in 2004; they finished 3rd behind Portugal and Greece.

    Neither did Italy, ousted by Sweden and Denmark.

    So yes, Sweden is the answer.

    Sweden got out of their groups in both the 2002 and 2006 World Cups (both tough groups) and advanced out of the group stage in Euro 2004. Sadly for the Swedes, they went 0-3 in the subsequent knockout rounds.

    Still, speaks well for their consistency if nothing else.
