No loan for Beckham
Question: Beckham mentioned going to England to play and get fitter - is a loan a possible option?
Alexi Lalas: We’ve discussed that and that’s not an option. That’s not something that we’ve contemplated, nor that we will in the future. He obviously has his international responsibilities and he’s done a good job here of preparing physically. We wish him well in his upcoming games with England, but the whole loan thing is not something that we’re contemplating at this time.
The possibility that Beckham raised about playing with an English club was apparently related to training with one, which quite a few MLS players do in the offseason. Eddie Johnson did it, Freddy Adu as well. Lalas said the Galaxy were open to that possibility, though he also pointed out that he felt Beckham could do with some rest. However, Beckham himself mentioned he doesn't like to take breaks and that he wanted to regain full fitness. In that case, Beckham could rejoin Man United, the club he obviously has the most ties with in England, but not for a loan. It would be for training purposes.
Can't blam a guy for not wanting to sit around for 5 months with only BS club exhibition tours to look forward to.
ReplyDeleteI agree with East River... if there's a positive about this whole tour deal it's that they will keep training, will keep fit and reduce the time they'll just be sitting around waiting for 08.
ReplyDeleteI heard his people spoke with Arsenal.
ReplyDeleteArsenal makes sense. Beckham and Arsene Wenger looked chummy when Beckham was there training with England earlier this year.
ReplyDelete...and its been quite some time since he and Sir Alex have looked chummy!
ReplyDeleteIts an added plus that Arsene Wenger is such a great mentor, which Beckham might find handy right now (who wouldn't for that matter).
Thanks for all the Gullit info, A.C.
Thanks for clarifying that quote in the aftermath of the charity match...
ReplyDeleteYep, unless Beckham wants to catch Sir Fergy's other boot in the face, I don't see him going to ManU. If Fergy had trouble with the off the pitch distractions back then, can you imagine what he'd think now?
ReplyDeleteNot to be a 'nay sayer' but , the only person saying "no loan " is Lalas' right .....and we all know what a reliable source of information he is !!!!...NOT....I think come January Becks' will be with either Man U (Jr team-w/a total media blk out - way possible without the lil' woman) , Arsenal , Sunderland (Keane' already offered a loan ) or L'pool....
ReplyDeletetime will tell
Robbi
Who would pay who in a Becks loan scenario? A team in England wouldn't pay to have Becks training would they?
ReplyDeleteThe Sun has "news"....England has to qualify for Euro 2008 for Becks to be loaned to Arsenal or Tottenham.
