Kinda strange pairing but MLS Cup will feature musical performances by Jimmy Eat World and Placido Domingo.
Jimmy Eat World will perform at halftime while Placido Domingo will belt out the national anthem Three Tenors style.
Hmmm... Jimmy Eat World had that one catchy song several years ago but have they done anything since? And I've got to admit, I'm not into opera. But then again, I'm not the target audience the league is trying to pursue with this musical entertainment.
However, if it were up to me, I'd have gotten The Killers and T.I. to perform at halftime. But The Killers are just finishing a world tour and T.I., um, well...
That catchy/annoying song was called "The Middle" and the video was the band playing at this "Underwear-only" house party.
ReplyDeleteA great questions to ask Mr. Domingo would be, "what's your favorite Jimmy Eat World song?" Or, better yet, "do you feel insulted that you have to share an e-mail with those guys?"
At least they could have done Cold Play (they haven't done anything in five years) or Blur or The Gorillaz (I hear their asking price is reachable, since you don't pay them in dollars).
I'm with you on this one, Luis. Jimmy Eat World? Jimmy Eat Dust.
I'm not really a big Jimmy fan but the album they put out a couple weeks ago debuted at #5 on the billboard chart for what it's worth.
ReplyDeleteCan you say "out of touch?"
ReplyDeletePlacido Domingo is great (I'm a bit biased because he heads up the local LA Opera)- and he's a soccer fan, too. He's performed at a bunch of World Cups as part of the Three Tenors.
ReplyDeleteOut of touch is incredibly accurate, anonymous. They've received tons of airplay on MTV (more than just their played-to-death song--which is of no fault of their own, mind you--"The Middle") and are one of the bands that influenced/created the Emo genre (which has since fallen far from the tree, but started off with much promise). Jimmy Eat World is a fantastic band and I guarantee you tons of their huge and very loyal fan base will be watching the Cup to see them.
ReplyDeleteAs matt said, Their newest cd released at #5 on the Billboard charts, and the album before that released at #6. The album before that one went platinum. What have they done? They have been very busy and very successful.
Well done MLS in helping bloggers get cultured.
Meh. I guess I spend too much time listening to Los Tigres Del Norte to pay attention to Jimmy Eat World.
ReplyDeleteSorry, elopingcamel, but I don't do my shopping at Hot Topic.
ReplyDeleteI'll try to mix in more MTV here and there, but every time I go to that channel they don't have videos, they have some reality show about people wanting to date Tila Tequila.
I thought this year it was going to be Weezer? Guess Rivers is back at school.
ReplyDeleteHaha. Touche, Jaime (with both the Hot Topic and MTV comments). My point wasn't that anyone on Earth should spend time watching that channel or going to that store. Luis's question was whether or not these "nobody's" or "has beens with one song" should be worthy to perform at an MLS Cup. I say, yay.
ReplyDeleteThey didn't just disappear. Maybe they aren't getting covered in your musical niche's market, but there are a ton of kids who DO know who they are and like them.
Not dissing Placido either, cause the man's a legend, but the idea that he'd be offended because the half-time show band isn't "the hottest thing on the charts" is a little silly. He may not dig the band, but that doesn't mean he is so pompous to think that only opera is a valid form of music (or that he'd be giddy like a school girl at the idea of Blur or The Gorillaz taking the stage).
