Good job, Andrea. You should expand on this issue with a poll or more interviews of all the African-Americans playing this sports nationally and internationally. This is good reading. It reminds me of this Black kid in my barrio who was simply, a BADASS with a soccerball. We couldn't catch him and when we did he just out-dribbled us. He will always be a legend despite the fact that he disappeared into thin air after sixth grade.
Nice article, Andrea. I think it's also worth pointing out that Cobi has other non-athletic/racial traits that make him a good role model, such as being educated and well read for one.
Quite a quality article. Jones' stature in the American game is often underestimated, even among his peers. As African-American players continue to make a greater impact for the USMNT and USWNT, the number of Black coaches will hopefully increase.
Ultimately, it is particularly impressive that no few people mentioned this - "First Black MLS coach etc"
However, as you allude- success and not race has become the guiding principle of both hiring and longevity throughout American sports.
I'm betting that in a few years, you'll be reporting that the first MLS coach of Puerto Rican ancestry will be hired - Chris Armas. He's a terrific leader and student of the game.
