Mexico mourns

... or rejoices depending on what colors you wear.

The four most popular clubs in Mexico met on Sunday as Cruz Azul played Pumas and America hosted Chivas.

Cruz Azul got a pair of goals from Miguel Sabah and beat Pumas 2-1. Later in the day, Juan Carlos Silva scored a pair as America beat Chivas 2-1 in the superclasico, which again lived up to its name.

America got a great performance from Memo Ochoa and the goalposts. Two Chivas shots hit the post and several others were saved by Ochoa. The story above doesn't mention crowd count but during the television broadcast the announcers said there were more than 100,000 people in Azteca for the game.

And just for kicks, here's a picture of Francisco Palencia and Cruz Azul goalkeeper Oscar Perez posing with their sons. Little Tristan Palencia's got a cool little hairdo.

  1. Despite the result, the SuperClassico was well worth the wait (almost midnight here by the time it ended).

When Santana was making his 37th cutback in the area, I thought we were going to see the goal of the season ... BUT nothing ... and that's how it goes so often for Chivas. A lot of great buildup, exciting attack, and no payoff at the end.

Bravo's header was wonderful but Ochoa and the woodwork saved the day for america so many times. It was a great match and while I think it deserved to be a draw, I'll give credit to america for scoring those two goals (Silva) amidst Chivas confusion (they did miss Reynoso in the back). america took their chances and scored and we didn't. Simple. Oh well.

One last thing, what do you think of Marco Rodriguez as a referee? I thought he had a great match yesterday, letting things flow and giving out the deserved yellows. For such a potentially combustible fixture, I think he did a nice job getting both sides to play attractive futbol.

  2. When he's on, Chiquidracula can be one of, if not the best, ref in Mexico.

But when he decides to be the star, look out.
