Ryan responds to Solo

Oh, boy. Sure enough, there are repercussions from Hope Solo's statements.

  1. CBC got the scoop here with Solo. I know there is a strong sentiment to respond "never call out your coach, never call out your teammate" but in life, these things happen and this was the first loss in 50 games and poorly handled by everyone starting with the coach. http://www.cbc.ca/sports/fifawomens/blog-paul/2007/09/ryans_goalkeeper_switch_backfi.html

  2. I noticed that as soon as I saw the video. I looked for the name on the mic talking to Solo and sure enough, it was CBC, not ESPN. The mixed zone is a free for all - ESPN was probably busy trying to get the big names who played. Erin was smart to jump on the chance to talk to Hope.

Yes, the press people do try to control what players say sometimes. Other times, they just won't get players for you or they tell players that the bus is leaving. Still, other teams are even worse when it comes to press access.

  3. Sorry, I'm stuck in meetings and can't listen to the audio file right now. What are the repercussions? Is she benched? Off the team? Grounded for life?

  4. Ryan talks about a "code" of loyalty among players that Solo has broken. He also mentions that the U.S. has many good goalkeepers (implication here is that Solo won't play the final match). He says reconciliation is possible if both parties wish it (implication here is that Solo has to apologize, and has not yet done so).

  5. Hope Solo is the man! Okay that sounds bad, but she needs to stand by her comments if she wishes to play for the WNT again. She only needs to apologize to Brianna and her teammates. That's it. Ryan doesn't need an apology from her since he's not concerned with Hope's feelings in the first place.

Live by the sword die by the sword. I do think Solo will be a part of this team again. Scurry and Ryan are a different story.

  6. I think Ryan needs to give the apology. He stated that he had been considering this decision for MONTHS! He didn't tell Solo about this until 2 days before the semi-final. She deserved better then that. She didn't specially speak on Scurry other than to say she would have made those saves. He just sounds that he didn't want her to speak at all, let the players "code of loyality" enforce itself, not a coach on an ego trip. Solo has no incentive to want to play for him again, why should she? He talks about breaking the code but he has broken her and others trust. She believes that she could have helped her team win and there is nothing wrong with that at the end of the day. After this tournament it will be interesting what the players say about their support of Ryan and his decision making.

  7. Reading all these articles and listening to Julie Foudy talk about how she wouldn't want Solo behind because of her going after Scurry. I have to totally disagree with Foudy. No where in Solo comments is she directly attacking Scurry though one can think she is being critical of Scurry her commments are really being critical of Ryan believing in the past and not having faith in her. Is that giving a slight to Scurry? The fact that the PR guy and USSF has ban players from talking shows they are trying to apply damage control. But telling a reporter to not speak to a player is just wrong and the CBC guy is right to suggest that this only made Solo even more upset.

As for Foudy and Ryan "Code of silence or Loyalty" that BS. Saying that you could help your team win is not being disloyal and not mentioning a player by name or directly targeting a player shows that she didn't actually break this mystical code some say exist. They need to stop trying to act like cookie cutters and get with it.

  8. "And the fact of the matter is, it's not 2004 anymore...it's 2007, and I think you have to live in the present. It doesn't matter what somebody did in an Olympic gold medal game in the Olympics three years ago, now is what matters..." I think it was pretty clear Solo was speaking on Scurry, which wasn't appropriate, no matter how upset she was.
Ryan, however, sounds a little too happy to have the media focus on Hope's comments instead of his own decisions -- and way too smug given the circumstances.

  9. No Diane Solo was speaking about Ryan. Ryan was an assistant coach on the 2004 squad. An Ryan was the one who past his decision on past performances, an he has said as much. A lot of people want it to be about Scurry but it not there.

  10. That makes a big difference in my view of her remarks. I saw the interview on a highlights show so I'm not sure whether I wasn't paying enough attention or something was lost in editing. Her vehemence made sense but, even angry, that part surprised me. (Although looking again, wouldn't "what somebody did... three years ago" still refer to Scurry?).

  11. Its tricky but attacking Ryan decision indirectly attacks Scurry. She had no intent to attack Scurry, she was attacking his reasoning which he based on Scurry past performances. He didn't take into accunt the fact she has aged and has not seen a lot of action lately or that Brazil has progressed a lot since 2004. As the NY Times Thomas Friedman would say "the world is flat" and Solo earned her spot in a flat women's soccer world. While Scurry is still considered one of the best of all time,Scurry earned it when women's soccer was very uneven. Like many in America haven't adjusted their thinking to compete in a flat global market, apparently neither has Ryan in women's soccer.

  12. Another way to look at it is from Briana's point of view. Even considering her long career, has she ever seen a more offensively capable team? I don't know who that would have been. And what tune-up did she get for it? That puts her in a very tough situation and hopefully this incident doesn't have an impact on her. I think the best word for her performance was rusty and we have Greg Ryan to thank for that. I really don't feel Solo called her out. The usual cliché is that you go with the hot hand. That is how I interpreted her comments. Everyone on that team who played or practiced every day must have known who the hot hand was. And I have to listen to Foudy, Ryan et al., excoriate Solo for publicly saying things while they just run their mouths all they want.....

    Jared.

  13. What Solo said was nothing short of unprofessional! She should never play for the National team again. The fact that she chose to make comments about her team is unacceptable. Regardless of the situation she cannot claim that she would have saved those shots etc. etc. Isn't there a TV program on spike for those kind of people called "Pro's versus Joes"?. Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to introduce you to Joe Solo!!!
