Veron to D.C.?

Looks like D.C. United is after another Argentine, except this one's a bit more recognizable. Juan Sebastian Veron has apparently narrowed down his choices to two clubs: Estudiantes of Argentina or D.C. United.

A figure of $20 million is given here as well as in a story that ran a while back that said Veron would get $20 million and live in Hollywood, which apparently won't happen (at least the last part of it).

Veron's a talented player and would be a tremendous addition to the league and D.C. Is he DP worthy? I think so. He'd certainly cement D.C.'s status as team to beat in the East, at least in my opinion. They've still got defensive issues but Veron would most definitely help the squad.

  1. No mls team is going to pay 20 million for Veron. Now if he wanted JP Angel money, that'd be believable, unless that was 20 million Argentine, not US.

  2. Veron is worth nowhere near $20 million. Also, considering his relative lack of success in England (when compared to his play in Italy and Argentina), I'd say MLS doesn't really suit him either.

He could be good for DC, but $20 million is beyond absurd for a player of his age and with his record in physical, atheticism-based leagues.

  3. Does DC even have 200K in cap room which the half a season of the DP salary would count for? The would have to make some more moves in the offseason or have Gomez leave to fit him in for the whole year I would think.

  4. As we had seen in the U.S. - Argentina match, Veron can still play some. But I am not sure he's worth $5.0 million (the reported price tag). I think that if D.C. United can get the price down a bit, it would be a good signing.

The big question is where can the league find a few more players like JPA?

  5. What about the rumor that has Veron going to Chivas USA?

  6. Forgot to add, re: Veron, that I know CUSA doesn't have a DP slot, so IF it were to happen, how amazingly complex would that contract look?

Not having a DP slot along should kill this rumor, but I like it. CUSA needs some glamor.

  7. Gents:
Juan Sebastian Veron is an excellent player that any team in the world would love to have. He has got a good 2 to 3 years of Euro level in him. When we went back to Estudiantes after Inter, he took them from being a normal team to a championship team in only one tournament...
I do agree however that 5 mil per year is way too much. However a contract like that of Angel would not be bad at all, but because of his credentials, he would be and should be asking a bit more $.
Gene, you pointed out that the MLS should look for more players like Angel, I could not agree more. Angel is a top player who would be a starter again this season in any EPL team. But if the MLS is looking for more players like him, I would suggest that they stop spending pennies on central american players (no offense...). Instead of getting 2 or 3 players with little experience, pool that money together and get one player from further south of the border or a player that has had expierence is a country like Argentina or Uruguay. Look at Schelotto, he is a great example (of course Angel that grew up playing for River Plate).

  8. On Goff's Soccer Insider blog, he says that it would be more like Angel money ($1.5 million) to get Veron.

I like Veron, I just don't think he's what DCU needs.

  10. I wasn't able to post earlier...

I don't think he's worth $5 million a year but I do think he's DP worthy. He's got skills left and he can still play at the highest level.

DC would be wise to get Veron at the right price.

  11. I'd love to see Veron in the MLS (only because I'm selfish--don't care and don't know how the style would suit him).

I don't see him leaving Estudiantes though. Or I suppose he could come cash in for few years and then go back and retire there ... wait and see, I guess.
